Environmental & Pollution

The impact of pollution can be devastating to your aviation clients. Airports, hangars, fixed-base operations, and supporting aviation services may be susceptible to environmental risk which may be excluded under general liability policies.

Pollution coverage may cover the following exposures:

  • Governmentally mandated clean up of polluted soil and water
  • Bodily injury or property damage from:
    • Escape of pollutants: gasses, fuels, toxics, etc.
    • Breach of storage containers
    • Toxic smoke
    • Loading and unloading of automobile or aircraft
    • And more
  • Injury to third parties on the premises

Environmental liability is a legal obligation caused by past or ongoing manufacturing, use, release, or threatened release of a particular substance; or by other activities that adversely affect the environment and/or human health. This is certainly an all-encompassing definition, and the result is that practically every commercial insured, especially aviation operators and aviation service providers, has some degree of exposure to environmental liability.

Some examples of possible pollutant contributors are:

  • Applying, storing and disposing of pesticides
  • Fire protection
  • Repair shops
  • Aircraft storage
  • Equipment storage
  • Fuel storage
